He’s so observant

Published by Tiffany under Crochet

Last Friday night we were heading out the door to meet my dad for dinner when I noticed that I was behind in my 2007 Crochet Page-a-Day page flipping.  I was catching up on my days when I noticed my pattern!  So, being the selfish person that I am, I left my page on front, even though we were a few days past.  I called Andy over to look.  I showed him the first page and this was our conversation:

ME:  Hey honey look!  It’s my pattern!
ANDY:  Cool, it’s a Tiffany hat.
ME:  No, really, it’s my pattern. (turning over page to show my photo)
ANDY:  Oh wow, it really is your pattern.
ME:  Yes, oh observant one.

You should hear our conversations about my sock knitting.  Last night, you can guess what I was doing by this response from my significant other, “Oh Tiff, don’t try it on.  Come on, don’t be a dork.  (sock is on) Hey.  You should leave it like that.  Make it an ankle bracelet.  Start a new trend.  (later, as he becomes more interested)  Do you think it will fit me?”

Weekly planning

Published by Tiffany under Crochet

This is the first time in my life that I’ve actually needed to keep a weekly planner of all of my activities. When I was working, I never had the need. I didn’t have appointments or lunches with clients to keep track of. Now, I’m volunteering in the mornings at the girls’ school (trying to average twice a week), I’m their Room Moms, I’m their Girl Scout Troop Leader (which I’m very excited about!), and they’re taking swim lessons. I’ve got an interview Monday evening at JC Penney for a holiday job to help out with a little extra Christmas money. I’ve just finished my paperwork to start after-school tutoring. It sounds like a lot to me, but it’s all working out well so far. I’ll probably not be as convinced of everything running smoothly after I start working a few evenings a week too. As far as that, I’m just excited to get out of the house in the evenings and make a little extra spending money.

Now that I’m finally over the nasty flu from last week that managed to keep me feeling miserable through this week, I have a few projects that I finished in September to share. First, I made hats for the girls. Laura’s is in worsted weight (Lion Brand Wool Ease) and Maddie’s is in fingering weight (Lion Brand Babysoft). I hope to post the pattern free in a few days, as soon as I find my notes.

Hey! That’s not Laura! She’s still at school so you get me as a model. :)

I also made a stash basket from a Bernat pattern. I haven’t woven in the ends yet and I need to buy starch to finish it out. It’s going to be an organizer for my bills more than a stash basket, but for now it’s home to the yarn for Laura’s Griffyndor scarf I’m working on.

Now, please avert your eyes if you would rather not see knitting, but I’m excited about what I’ve accomplished. It’s my first sock!! It’s the training sock from Knitty. I used Red Heart Sport and Size 3 needles. I’m going to weave in the ends and put it with my Christmas ornaments. It’s cute although not perfect.

Now, just as exciting - I started a pair of Monkey socks!  I’m just on the first bit of ribbing because I’m not working exclusively on it (got that scarf to finish), but no troubles with 5 dpn’s so far.  I’m impressed with the twisted ribbing, I’m not just particularly impressed with knitting in to the back loop.  It takes too much time.

It’s back to cleaning the house for me.  Mom & J are coming up this weekend for a visit.  The State Fair is on the schedule for tomorrow so hopefully I’ll have a bunch of cool pictures to share.  Have a wonderful weekend!

At Least the Flu is Better Than a Brain-Eating Amoeba

Published by Tiffany under Just Babble

Do you remember how I said on Monday that I didn’t feel well?  Monday was a great day compared to the last few days.  I got dressed just to take the girls to school and came home to veg on the couch.  My fever finally broke yesterday, which was a blessing because by that point, all I wanted to do was get in my car and drive home to my mom.  Andy isn’t the supportive-while-you’re-sick type.  At all.  Men.  As for today - I’m alive!  I even mopped the kitchen, which was probably too much for my first day of activity all week, but it needed done.

I would have photos to share, but I’m letting the girls watch videos on LaunchCast on my computer since their dad’s out at poker night.  I think I could live without hearing non-stop Trace Adkins though.  I tried to expand their music repetoire with a little U2, but Laura said that they’re not rock and roll.  I’m ashamed girls.  I’m replacing all of the CD’s in the car with my U2 collection.  We’re going to have music lessons on the way to school every morning.

Relief!  Launch Cast just went down.  I think we’re going to make down the sofa bed and have a movie night.  Now that I can function again, I’ll post photos of all of the things I’ve been working on.  The more I crochet, the less I post.  The more I post, the less I crochet.  Eventually, I’ll find even ground.

Bye Biggio

Published by Tiffany under Crochet

Disclaimer:  I’m feeling like very under the weather today, thinking a mild case of food poisoning since it started right after lunch, so I apologize in advance for no crochet in this post.  Hopefully, if all if well tomorrow, I’ll have a lot of photos.  I’ve been doing a little research.

Andy and I bought tickets to the last game of the Astros season back in April.  Our feeling was, if the ‘Stros were in the hunt for either the pennant or the wild card, we’d want to be there.  If they weren’t, it still had the possibility of being a fun game.  After Craig Biggio announced his retirement earlier this year, tickets for the last game became a hot commodity in Houston.  The game was sold out, followed quickly by the standing room only tickets.  Through a great turn of events last Thursday, I was able to sell our nosebleed seats and sit instead in my aunt’s tickets behind home plate.

Andy and I pulled up to our favorite parking lot only to find it full - at 10:30 am.  The game was scheduled to start at 1:05 pm.  After a little drive around the block, we found another spot.  There were lines around the field because the gates weren’t scheduled to open until 11:00 am.  Mind you, we went to Game 4 of the 2005 World Series and had no trouble with parking or with getting inside the field, so I was shocked.  Finally, at noon, we made it through the lines and headed for our seats to rest after an hour and a half in the lovely Houston heat.

Not too bad after the heat, huh?  I cut my hair again, too.  Mom says it’s too short - pshaw.

Minute Maid Park had a playoff feel to it that normally would not permeate a stadium whose team was destined to finish so far below .500 for the season.  The Houston Astros fans of my childhood were fair weather fans.  There were many games in the 80’s when the Astrodome was noticeably empty.  Not that we minded.  It meant that we could sit closer to the game than in the cheap seats.  And we could almost always get tickets on the side of field that we requested.  I don’t remember a time that my family were not Astros fans.  Did we care that our team did not have a long history nor it have a particularly stellar record?  Not at all.  My earliest memory of a ball game was waiting very impatiently for Jose Cruz to be announced in the lineup so that I could yell, “Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz” with all of the other thousands of fans.

In 1987, I was in sixth grade.  I had vowed the year before that the New York Mets would be my most despised team ever after they beat us in the 7th game to keep us from our first ever World Series.  I’ve since replaced them as the worst, but twenty years later I can honestly say that I watched the Marlins score on Sunday with glee while at the game.  In 1987, my favorite Astro was Alan Ashby, mostly because we saw him regularly at gymnastic meets.  His two sons were around the same age as my younger brother, who was taking classes at Bela Karolyi’s gym at the time.  I tried not to like the rookie who was slowly, but surely, taking over Ashby’s spot behind the plate, but it was hard not to like Craig Biggio.  I remember the excitement of his first plate appearance, his first hit, and his first home run.  There was youth on the team again for the first time in awhile and I was finally old enough to pay attention to that fact as I became aware that there was more to baseball than whether the team won or lost.  Thank you, Craig Biggio, for twenty wonderful years of baseball.  I look forward to seeing you in the spotlight again in 2012.

Biggio seconds before his 668th, and final, double of his career.
